Should I get a FLU shot?
By Justforseniors.org | September 13, 2011 at 04:58 PM EDT | No Comments

So who needs a flu shot and should you get one? According to HEARTLAND seniors and young children are most likely to get the flu.

The big question is whether people will get it. Usually each year's flu vaccine varies from the previous versions as different influenza strains emerge. This year, the vaccine's a duplicate because the three flu strains that sickened people last winter still are circulating

The best time to get the shot is coming since flu season starts in November

Exercises to Keep YOU Healthier for Longer
By Justforseniors.org | September 03, 2011 at 01:33 PM EDT | No Comments

Solid research has proven again and again that if you exercise, you can live as much as six to eight years longer. And not only that, you will also spend those bonus years being more comfortable in your body. To give you an idea of how substantial a gift that is, subtract eight years from your current age and think back to where you were then. Would exercising every day be worth living that much additional time? I vote yes.

Here are 10 easy exercises to keep you healthier for longer.

The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety
By Justforseniors.org | August 25, 2011 at 07:55 PM EDT | No Comments

Maybe I shouldn’t have made this just for seniors because today's entry isn't just for seniors.  It is about preparing yourself for a disaster.  The headline this week is about the devastating storm the east coast is expecting from Irene.  Even though we are not on the east coast waiting for a hurricane, we are on the west coast where fire and earthquake are constant perils.  Most of the time we try to ignore the threat.  A few years ago when a fire swept through our neighborhood in Orange, I was not prepared for the disaster it caused and we were lucky.

The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety suggests using Irene as a drill.  Even if we don’t expect a threat almost everyone experiences some sort of tragedy in their lifetime and being prepared is very important.  Pictures of the inside and out of our home showing property along with a handy box or two of important papers and treasured keepsakes should be on the ready to take with you in an evacuation.  Pictures can be stored at someone else’s home, a safety deposit box or even in your refrigerator.

Several years ago after the Northridge quake, my husband bought each of us an earthquake kit for our cars.  We no longer have the kits and I know we should.  So this week I am going out to buy each of us another kit incase the inevitable happens next week.

Welcome Boomers
By Justforseniors.org | August 24, 2011 at 07:50 PM EDT | No Comments

I dedicate this blog site to those of us who are Baby Boomers. Landon Jones, who coined the term "baby boomer" in his book Great Expectations: America and the Baby Boom Generation, defined the span of the baby-boom generation as extending from 1946 through 1964, when annual births declined below 4,000,000. Seventy-six million American children were born between 1945 and 1964 and boomers grew up at a time of dramatic social change. In the United States, that social change marked the generation with a strong cultural cleavage, between the proponents of social change and the more conservative. Some analysts believe this cleavage played out politically since the time of the Vietnam War to the mid-2000s, to some extent defining the political landscape and division in the country.

The goal of this site is to give you a one-stop resource for issues related to "our" generation since I am an early member of the Baby Boomers myself. From published recourses I will be updating this site weekly. I hope you enjoy your adventure into retirement and the challenges we face together.

If you are a follower of Facebook check out my wall http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/Karen-Adams-Insurance/273630652652546?sk=wall.  Later this year, we will be publishing a new web site dedicate to keep seniors aware called http://justforseniors.org.  And if you like what you read, please forward this blog to your friends concerned about senior issues.

Busy, yes, sitting still, no--JUST looking forward to NEW HORIZONS! new horizons.
